If someone smarter than I is going to finish this page, please write down somewhere that if you are using a Mac, ToyViewer is a nice freeware (since Mac doesn't have Paint/Fireworks etc. and the grab utility only allows you to save in .png, which is horrible when you are working on creatures, who need a .jpg). It can crop screenshots and save them as .png and .jpg files (and all other sorts). It also tells you what the x and y size is when you make a selection. It took me some time to figure out this program existed, so if added it can help another person. --Ravanel 17:53, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Your wish is my command, but I can't write the section that gives details of how to use it. David 18:10, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Can a ninja move images or only icons (and is there a difference).

The text says: Move/Rename Icon Icons are now able to be moved and renamed when changes occur. The Move function is found next to the search box within the drop down menu (down arrow) next to the Read, Edit, and View History buttons. You must be Ninja status in order to have this option available.

Is this still true?

Or should it read -- " Images and Icons are able to be moved and renamed when changes occur..."

Also "when" does the move menu show up... when viewing the icon/image or when editing the page.

Good catch! According to Special:ListGroupRights, you need to be an administrator or above (Admin, Bureaucrat, Director) to move files, so this needs to be updated. That includes both Images and Icons, as they're the same thing; we just make a distinction because all icons are the same size, end in -icon, and use .png - more of a convention than anything else. You should be able to see the "move" option on any non-file page (I think anyone who has an account can move a regular article) regardless of whether you're reading or editing the article - in the default skin, it appears in the drop-down menu (downward pointing arrow) to the right of "View History." Can someone ?Zimoon?Elinnea?Adelas? elaborate on this

Once again, playing the rabbit, I started to add some info on Turbine's skin files and noticed the following sentence under: Notice about Icons

Before you go ahead and perform a lot of work, remember that most in-game icons are re-used for many, many other items. Hence, usually the icon already exists and you can refer to it by its generic name. See Category:Icons for all existing icon images, sorted by type. Just be cautious to find the one that matches the in-game item, including correct background, visual effects, etc., some are very similar but have small but discernible differences.
For info, we also have a project about unify same-looking icons to generic and better quality icons. Lotro-Wiki.com:Images

The offset sentence at the end of the paragraph above is the one in question. I added the link to the only project I could find ... Images. But that doesn't have anything to say about the unification effort. And I'm not completely certain what was intended.

I would also add, assuming I'm understanding what was intended -- it is not "unification" so much as "generalization" -- I just ran into the "issue" with crafting and discovered that a lot of the "specific" item icons can (are) easily being replaced by "generic" icons, and that there are several pages of "indexes" for these items.

and

One problem which exists with this "uinfication/generalization" effort is the fact that the "Item Template" FORCES the author to create an icon with the name of the page. While historically, this was clearly what was intended and what was done. The new effort is contrary to that. Eghad, there goes that rabbit again...

Oh yeah, the info about the skinning files is going at the bottom of the page, and can be put where ever it seems appropriate.

I believe the sentence you ask about was written by me when I cleaned up the help text. I do not know anything about the icon-link and how to deal with it, if I find the "shared" icon I replace the auto-generated thing with that, but to be honest I have no idea what the correct way is. If there is some magic stuff going on it is not explained, but personally I think the auto-generated link is to help the user get the icon-name correct but only in the case it really is a new icon. It should probably have a trailing <-- replace with icon name if you find any --&gt> or something like that.
There are some project pages somewhere, I wonder if not this effort is mentioned there, not sure though. Tonight I am playing, resting from Bree-land locations :P

A bit late probably, but the generic icon was my effort. On every item you create, you should enter the generic icon in the icon template (or the respective template you are using). If you don't enter anything, I assume that there is no generic icon and that you have to upload a new non-generic icon. I'm not sure why this should be contrary at all. --EoD (talk) 11:45, 3 April 2012 (EDT)

Copying icons vs reusing icons?

I've read the Notice about Icons but am still confused about how to deal with this one. It doesn't help that the existing icon is for an obsolete trait. So for Monster Play, we have the "new" Resistance Boost corruption trait, which has the same icon as the obsolete Light Mitigation Boost (Rank 1). Should I just include File:Light Mitigation Boost (Rank 1)-icon.png as is, or should I first create a new icon entry with the same png? B0 (talk) 10:58, 2 April 2012 (EDT)

I'd use the existing icon as long as it is in good shape with high quality. It is the page that is obsolete, not the icon ;) -- Zimoon 12:23, 2 April 2012 (EDT)
I 2nd that :p --EoD (talk) 10:47, 3 April 2012 (EDT)

"Post processing" lighting issues for screen shots

One long-standing issue which has become a problem with the release of the Mordor Expansion is the simple fact that large sections of the entire game, day and night, are now quite dark.
Fitting the mood of the Expansion, the game world is dark to the point where none of the "lighting tips" above make a significant impact on the captured screen shot, of the NPC, Creature, MOB or landscape image we desire to use in the Wiki.
So, what can you do? Simply put, some kind of post capture processing is necessary.
Those of you familiar with traditional Film and Paper processing, especially with Black and White photography, will understand how it is possible to take a negative and process it through techniques like "dodging" or "burning-in". Finding Digital tools to do this can be quite a challenge without moving into the realm of the Professional Digital Photographer (i.e. spending money).
  • Contemporary versions of OSX, the Mac operating system, have a program called Preview distributed as a standard part of the Operating System. In particular, Preview has a tool called Adjust Color which, by using the Exposure slider, can brighten up almost all images - maing detail visible which is otherwise lost in the original.
This tool is accessed under the Tools pull-down menu when you have an image open. While you can modify many different settings, the Exposure setting will normally solve the problem. Note that it is possible to adjust the exposure, save the image and re-open it to further lighten it if necessary.
Another useful feature of Preview is the ability save an image and convert its original format from say, .png, to .jpg. This is done via the save command.

The above text is proposed as an addition to the Help:Images page. I do not have any experience with an equivalent PC program for any version of Windows, so feel free to add whatever you are aware of. Wm Magill - Valamar - OTG/OTC - talk 20:05, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Looks pretty good - we can tweak some of the language but overall a good addition to the help page and anyone, including me, who can help with a PC imaging software section would be great! Rogue (talk) 20:18, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Animations using gif format

Has anyone uploaded character, npc, monster, or other animation using gif format? If no would this be acceptable to attempt? Cobalt Blues (talk) 06:57, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
