Lore

Dragonets are the smallest variety of Dragon-kind, the hatchlings of the larger Drakes. Dragonets resemble miniature versions of the great winged Dragons of past ages. Most are about the size of large bats.

In Enedwaith, Dragonets referred to as Gwiberlings are the offspring of the fearsome Gwiber. Fire-drake hatchlings roam the Dale-lands, while young Cold-drakes can be found in Ered Mithrin and Withered Heath.

The Dragonets of Moria appear to be a separate sub-species of pygmy Drakes that exists without the presence of a larger Dragon. They are found within the Flaming Deeps, the Silvertine Lodes, Nud-melek, and on the peak of Zirakzigil. They are a frequent nuisance to the Dwarves in their attempt to reclaim their ancestral home.

Background

J.R.R. Tolkien uses the term "dragonet" in Unfinished Tales, referencing newly hatched dragons. However, "dragonet" is sometimes used to refer to miniature dragons in other fantasy fiction.
