Description

Corpse-candles are beings of light, the foul remains of people fallen, that swarm around passing adventurers. They are a type of lesser Shades, spirits of the dead. The site most famous for its Corpse-candles is the Dead Marshes on the border of Mordor. However, Corpse-candles have been known to manifest elsewhere near burial grounds, swamps, or sites of power, leading travelers astray. The peoples of Middle-earth give various local names to Corpse-candles, such as Elhudan, Limrafn, or simply Bog-lights.

Corpse-candles do not attack, per se, however they do have other effects that generally debuff your character. They are weak toward Westernesse and are resistant to Common and Tactical damage.

Lore

Corpse-candles are described by Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings in the account of the Dead Marshes. They are inspired by the legend of the Will-o'-the-Wisp, a phenomenon in swamps and marshes described in ancient folklore. Variously believed to be faeries, ghosts, or the spirits of unbaptized children, Will-o'-the-Wisps are thought by scientists to be caused by ignition of swamp gases.
